Hi
my dad has being restoring a bantam D14/4
He hasn't got a recent log book for it and the registration does not come up on DVLA website
He has how ever got the original green log book for it with the last change of keeper in 1976
I am wondering how to obtain a log book and retain the original registration of the bike
any help would be great fully appreciated
Many thanks

Essentially (the simple version), if you have the old style log book AND the frame number matches what the log book says (and it's not showing on DVLA website) then you should be able to retain the old registration.  You need DVLA forms V756 and V55/5, together with clear photographs of the bike and Frame/engine no's.  This is sent to the Club for review, to do a report and recomendation, and this is then forwarded to DVLA.  The Club makes a charge of £25 (members) or £30 (non members) for this.
If you are interesting in following this up, please email to datinginfo@bsaownersclub.co.uk and I can send you some more detailed notes and guidance.
Also - there is information on the website on all aspects of registrations (see https://www.bsaownersclub.co.uk/register-flowchart).

There may be a quick / cheaper way.  Is the green log book in your name? Its worth phoning the DVLA and seeing if they still have the number and will update the bike to the new format V5.  Its a long shot but not unknown.  If it was in a shed (as it seems it was) when SORN came in and it was not notified to the DVLA then they will issue the new V5 free, but SORN it straight away or you'll get a fine! One trick is to phone and say you want to SORN it and see if they can find it on their system.
I registered an '53 Matchless, all I had was the frame number.  I needed the dating cert (and got one) but then the DVLA traced the frame they found the reg had not been reissued so rather than re-register they just issued a replacement V5 and refunded my registration payment!

It's not quite how limeyrob puts it .... you need to complete the V756 (see https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-to-register-a-vehicle-under-its-original-registration-number), and you need an authorised person on the V756/1 list (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6942b955501cdd438f4cf526/v765-1-list-of-vehicle-owners-clubs.pdf) to confirm the details (such as the BSAOC) ... we do make a small charge for this (which goes into Club funds for Library purchases - and is a lot less than some others!!).

Yes and no. For the Matchless I did all the dating cert and the application with photos and sent the money, assuming that the DVLA would assign a new number. But in my case luck was on my side so they found the old number and just re-issued it which is cheaper.
I helped someone get a new V5 on a bike that had been in a shed for about 20 years and I did that by getting a replacement log book and SORN but this only works if you know the person its registered to as they have to make the SORN request and the V5 is posted to them, then you can do the change of ownership.  This one was tricky because the guy had bought the bike but could not read and write so he'd never done the change of ownership or used the bike on the road (he lived on a farm), a slightly odd situation, but the DVLA were very helpful.
