stripping the frame down there is play in the swinging arm bushes.
this frame has the plain bronze bushes not the later rubber isolastic ones. Ive removed the bolts and grease nipples from the ends and assume the spindle should be a press fit? Ive tried a hammer and pin to drive out but wont move, my next option would be a hydraulic press. am I missing something, its not held in by a bolt or pin is it?

They can be very very tight. No pin or bolt.

thanks Julian
the ends were full of grease so presumably holes blocked and didnt get to where it was supposed to be.

JulianS

The hole does not go right through the hole length, only the area of the bushes gets grease.

ahh, so seizes in the middle part of the main frame then.

The pin can be very tight. Mine needed pressing out with a bench press. The gauge said nearly 2.5 tons force needed to move it !
However, when it was all apart, I cleaned up the pin and inside the frame and it all went back together without too much force and without any play! The reason I took it apart was the swinging arm was solid - could remove the shock absorbers and the bike didn't collapse. Lack of maintenance by a previous owner!

Cheers all, the advantage of having a 1 ton hydraulic press available..

I have just done mine this morning. I found that my socket set extension bar was literally half a mm smaller than the shaft. Therefore it was the perfect tool to hit it out, using a lump hammer. And because there is a square hole in it, there was no contact with the thread. Took some hitting, but came out ok in the end.
