Oil pipe tap

I think I saw an article recently in one of the classic bike magazines about fitting an external tap/valve in the oil feed pipe, in order to deal with incontinence. Does anybody know which mag and which date? I have got a tap on my bike (1965 B40F) but am wondering about re-doing it at some stage.  Phil.

A tap fitted to the oil supply is only a fleeting moment away from a very expensive full engine rebuild

Mmm...maybe I need to think about this. The previous owner said he'd fitted the tap in order to cure the incontinence which was making the kickstart hard for him to operate (he had a bad hip.) He said the reason he hadn't addressed the problem at source - presumably the non-return valve - was that he didn't want to jeopardise the oil-tight seal on the casing surfaces.  Is getting to the non-return valve a big job? (probably enormous for the likes of me!) Phil.

You need to split the crankcase to service the valve. Or it could be coming from the pump to crankcase joint as well.

Have you seen these valves which go in the oil feed line. The seller has been doing these for many years. Some owners like them others not. I used the A10 version for a few years until a new oil pump solved the problem.

And what happens if it sticks? gear pumps are not good a sucking

Phil C

Split the crankcase?  That sounds a bit too involved for me at this stage in my development.   Phil.

I had the odd wet sumping spillage on winter lay ups, I fitted a small gas tap at the oil tank outlet, internal bore the same as the outlet pipe, switch this off when the bike is laid up, problem solved.
The engine is oil tight and so I didn't want to get access to fix a minor periodic problem.
Yes it is expensive if you forget to switch it on, but as it is only an inch or so from the electric switch it forms part of my pre ride checks, don't switch it off in summer when I regularly run the bike.

I wonder if you (om15) are the person I bought my bike from!

Out of interest, does anybody know which magazine this subject was in?

Phil.

I have had one in the Super Rocket for over 15 years with no problems. I can't imagine Polly would keep selling them if there was a problem.
