I have been forced to apply for the above by DVLA, the latest step being to make an appointment to have the bike inspected by Davies motors who will then report back to DVLA, has anyone else had this done and how did it turn out also do you have to pay another fee ??

Yes, its a pretty smooth but slow process.  Do you have a registration on the bike?  Do you have a V5 (I assume not)?
If it has a registration there's a chance the DVLA an find it and issue a new V5, this is faster and cheaper than getting a new period reg issued.

Bradshaw

I don't have a V5 but the bike does have a reg number which DVLA refuse to recognise despite it being on their database !! the problem they say is because the engine is not the original,it's very frustrating !!

Sadly , it sometimes depends upon whom you talk tp.
I've recently been sorting out registration and they couldn't have been more helpful

Take a step back, try to get a replacement V5, you may have to get this posted to the previous owner.  If you can get that don't mention the engine yet.  If you do get a V5 then do the change of owner then SORN on line.  Then tax it (free) and in a few weeks notify them of the engine number change, but note!!! You are now allowed to re-stamp some numbers so it may be possible to re-stamp the engine to match the registration details.

Davies Motors are contracted to the DVLA to inspect vehicles. You will not be charged. They will need to see a complete bike including the the frame and engine stampings and will take photos.

The frame number will be flagged on the DVLA systems. They will not issue a  V5C to that frame number until their enquiries reach a satisfactory conclusion.

They may have some previous information on their system concerning the frame number which has resulted in the enquiry.

I did this 3 years ago and the DVLA worked from my photos and a club heritage certificate (it was a Matchless).  At no point was the bike inspected by anyone.   Frame and engine numbers did not match (Matchless frame, AJS engine) but years did and capacity, both 1953, 350cc.  The bike was complete but not running and the lights were not wired up. It was basically a basket case I assembled.  I paid for the new registration but after about 2 months I got a letter from the DVLA refunding most of my payment as they had found the frame number and original reg and it had not been cancelled so they issued a new V5 in my name.  They said it was Matchless as the engine had no role in the bike's identity, only the frame.  Your experience is very much at odds with mine, I wonder if there have been changes a the DVLA?
It came with no V5 and all I had was purchase receipt.

I've recently had my B40 inspected.
The guy was here about five minutes and took photos of the bike and its various parts.
He said normally it takes DVLA about a Fortnite to issue a V5 after inspection.
Hopefully I'll hear next week.

Bradshaw

thankyou to all for your help, it's most appreciated.

MOONSDRIFT

I tried to get the V5 on my BSA
from DVLA, but as the frame number was worn (but you could read it!) they wanted me to get it inspected, but this was over 40 miles away and so not an option.

Hi,

Bikes can be inspected by the BSAOC. Enquire through the BSAOC website.

Dave.

Agreed.  Most clubs have a well sorted procedure. I've not used the BSAOC but have no doubt its good.  I did use the Jampot (AJS Matchless) and it was a great help.  The dating officer can provide the paperwork and certificate, also a check list and guidance on what photos to take.  Follow their instructions and there should be no need for a visits. I didn't need one and my bike had no registration and non-matching engine and frame numbers.
The worst place to start is the DVLA, start with the club and get everything right before you go anywhere near the DVLA.

V500

Agreed, never give them (the DVLA) a reason or excuse to say "no".

For general information, we are now able to offer inspections (where required) by video call to avoid long distance travel.  Often photographs are sufficient.

If you've got any queries on registrations then there is updated information on the website (look under "Club Services" / "Machine Registration" in the menu) or please contact me at datinginfo@bsaownersclub.co.uk and one of us can provide some guidance.
