Hi Folks,
I'm just running in my '71 A65L after a rebuild. I've done about 500 miles and I'm doing an oil change / tighten down cylinder head. I took out the push rods in the process. at one end the inlet rods have a "pip" at the bottom of the cups see picture. I'm guessing this cannot be right. I have used a little round ended stone in a dremil to grind one off, easy enough. but I'm thinking maybe I should get new rods.
Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks Glenn

Aren't these pips formed by the ball end of the rocker?
What are the rocker ball ends like ?

Thanks Rhyatt, looking at the rocker ends I guess yes, they have oil hols so that might explain it. It seems like a lot of wear for just 500 miles but they were new rods with old rockers so maybe...
So probably I should refit them as the parts are wearing together. Would you still carefully grind the pips out at this stage?

Many thanks for your reply
Cheers Glenn

New rods and old rockers , they have to bed in together.
Obviously , the pip is formed by the bedding in of the rocker ball into the cup , up to the point where the entire ball end is bearing on the entire cup surface.
Personally, I probably wouldn't bother , other that keeping a close eye on the valve clearances , which will be affected by this ball and cup wear.

Thanks again Ryatt, on inspecting the Exhaust rods they were even worse so in order to reduce the amount of metal floating around in the engine I did grind out the worst of it being careful not to hit the rest of the socket. I'll have it apart again in another 500 miles and take another look.
Thanks for your Advice, Cheers Glenn

Whilst your rockers are accessible, have a look at cleaning the oil holes in the rockers, this will mean taking them out. They should feed oil which comes off the rocker spindle, through a hole and out of the tip/ball. If you have decent oil flow, just like the big ends, the oil should form a blanked between the cup and ball so you don't get wear. Also it should help reduce any clatter. Since your getting this kind of wear, it would lead me to think that these rockers have their little oil feeds blocked up.
