Hello, please can anyone explain the purpose of the spring loaded cylinder at the bottom of the front brake rod on a 1936 model.
I'm currently resurrecting a Model 18.
Many thanks.

Dave,

It is a bayonet fitting it screws up and locks. That is to unlock the brake rod from the wheel so you can remove the wheel to fix a flat tyre.

Kind regards,

Ah! I see, like a quick release, many thanks. I wondered what the knurled ring was for, mine is seized tight, it will need to be worked on. I'll report back.
Thanks again and kind regards.

It is now freed up with a little oil and a pair of pliers and working lovely. A friend and me were musing what an elaborate device just to save unscrewing the connection on the brake lever. And why cable and rod not just a cable like other manufacturers? Surly costs would have been cut.

Hi Dave,

Yes I agree a 12 part brake rod doesn't sound very efficient but then again this was the De Luxe model ;D ;D. I have a B18 myself and it is a lovely bike though a bit tiny for my 6'5".

Kind regards,
