Would anyone be interested in purchasing cast alloy barrels that would need to be bored and lined after purchase. Price would be somewhere around the £950 mark? I would need to have around 10 people to make it cost effective.

DAVE BRADY

Hi chrisx1,

By the time they are lined and bored to standard and pistons purchased the price would probably be more than an SRM 750 kit at £1272.35.
Although currently not available it may be worth speaking to SRM even if you only want a 650.

Dave.

You could also contact LSR who was making the John hill barrels before he passed away. They are still making them in batches if people pre order. My thunderbolt has a set, they machine them to suit your piston etc. then nicasil coat them which is far superior than the cast liners.

Allan, who are LSR please?

EDDIE SIMPSON

i didnt know john hill passed away. he was friendly and very knowledgeable. i have a set of his barrels here for my spare engine which must have been his last batch.

Allan G

I beleive LSR are based up in Scotland. From what I know they are a foundry.

John had them making barrels for a few years, by now the market probably became saturated. But they have all the moulds still and are making barrels, as I say they will do them in batches. Deck height and bore are all machined after the initial casting. I will find the information posted on britbike and put a link here.

Forgive my ignorance, but what are the advantages of alloy barrels over the original cast iron ones on a touring machine? I appreciate they may look smarter, but what effect will it have on performance etc?

Allan G

For performance, better cooling. They also are a fraction of the weight of a cast iron barrel.

They are also cheaper I think to manufacture, and you can easily have any bore or stroke size from those currently being made.

Thanks Allan,
The better cooling would be useful for classics as most of us use them when the sun shines and it gets hot caught up in traffic. Also, the weight difference would be useful in competition.
