Iam going to fit Pazon electronic ignition and whilst waiting for delivery decided to take off outer timing cover, but when removing the cover there was quite a bit of oil in the rear compartment around the kickstart mechanism, Is this normal as when I looked at the parts list I cannot see an oil seal to prevent gearbox oil from seeping through. Also there is no gasket on the outer cover  it was sealed with some form of sealant. Thanks

Is it from a timed crankcase breather?

That would be gearbox oil leaking out. The kickstart spindle and quadrant also acts as the layshaft timing side support by a needle roller bearing fitted into it and the housing it's fitted into in the inner timing cover doesn't have any seal. On these bikes, both the inner and outer timing covers don't have gaskets, so you have to make sure all surfaces are free of rough spots etc and use a decent sealant on the joint faces (sparingly!!)

Thanks for those replies, so it is normal to have oil in that rear compartment it will not leak into the other compartment as long as you have a goodseal on the casing joint. Will make sure the surfaces are clean and will use a good jointing sealer.

I have used many sealers over the years  but Wellseal is the best.
It comes in a tube.
