Oil pipe union

I'm trying to replace the gasket at the crankcase oil pipe union on my '64 A65 Rocket.  The frame is interfering with removing the bolt.  BSA shop manual implies the union has to come off before removing the engine.  Shouldn't the union be able to be removed without pulling the engine?  Where am I going wrong?

Hi,

It could be that the wrong bolt has been used and fitted before the engine was fitted.  I believe that the bolt should have a thinner head and must be the correct length to be able to be removed without loosening some of thew engine bolts.
You may have to remove the through bolt under the engine and loosen the others so that the engine can be levered up a bit.

Thanks Dave.  Is it desirable to change to an o-ring version of the union like the '66 and up?  Does the crankcase require a recess for fitment of the o-rings?  This is my first BSA.  Thanks again for your input.

Hi,

As far as I can remember the recesses are in the union.  The other difference is that the rocker feed comes from the union rather than from a pipe sticking out of the tank.  I would say no real advantage if you can get it oil tight.

Dave.
