Rear chain adjustment

Hi All, just acquired a 1970 starfire the chain has about 1.5in to 2in of travel!, What is the correct measurements,     TIA - kev

With bike on its wheels unladen - about half of what you have now.
Also worth checking if bike is new to you that there are not tight spots where you check one bit and it is correct and another bit too tight or visa versa.
Don't know if Starfires put out enough oomph for wheelies and chain stretching antics!?
