1970 A65T rear wheel alignment and spindle torque

I have put my rear wheel (QD type) back in and was wondering how tight the spindle should be?

Also how can I align the wheels, the proposed method in the workshop manual seems to be impossible as the centre stand does not allow a line of sight straight line?  Am I being stupid or am I missing something.
I did wonder about using a jack off the side stand, but the pipes a little lower than the frame and so is the (SRM type) sump plate.  There seems nowhere else to jack it on?
