I am seeking a bit of advice.
I have a 1970 pre OiF Thunderbolt.
I hope to do some longer distances next year and need a way of carrying things.
An obvious choice is the Craven panniers, I am not keen on then hard cases and wanted soft bags and tent etc.
I think I am looking for just the frame like the M20/B31 style and was wondering if something similar ever existed for and A65 or could be modified to fit?

What do others do when travelling?

Thank you.

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Your choice of soft over hard luggage is entirely yours and each have their pros and cons.  I prefer hard luggage and have used Craven panniers for many years.  I like the idea that they are waterproof easily removed from the bike but can also be secured if necessary.   BSA did do a frame but I would imagine they are very hard to find and probably need a single seat.  There are universal racks that can be used and support for soft luggage can be added.
I suppose it also depends on what you intend to carry.  For longer camping trips a bit more gear is needed and it is worth talking those little extras to make life more comfortable.
My A65 is well loaded but is great to ride.  The luggage etc. is much lighter than a pillion and as such does not cause a problem.
A tank bag is also a useful bit of kit for thing that may need on route.

Hello Dave

Thank you sorry the delay, I have heard the Craven frame are a bit week as they use flat bat not round.  I imagine the odd person has had a bad experience?

Thanks
Matthew

Hi Matthew,

The rack/frame itself is made from round tube.  The only flat bar used is for the strut from the footrest lugs to the frame and to 'hang' the rack from the rear loop of the bike frame.
Both of our bikes have covered a lot miles loaded up with camping gear and we have never had a break on the racks or supports.
The last time looked on-line there were several sets of original Craven luggage available.

Dave.
