Any idea what this could be, there seems to be enough gap   between rotor and stator , have tightened the chain tension , there is some wear on the clutch tangs and cage . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgG2BBcFrjE

If you mean the 'whistling' sound that is quite normal. I put it down to the primary chain running over the tensioner. With the cover on it's more of a humming sound.

pockets

its more than a whistling sound , its  a quite  pronounced load chattering.

Is there anyone  with  mechanical experience of  working on classic  bikes willing to perhaps come have a look at it for some advice who live  near Newbury Berkshire ?

Spaceman

I can't really make out an unusual sound from the video but the thing that strikes me from watching it is the amount of flexing in the upper run of the the primary chain. Intuitively, I would have expected there to be relatively little flex although I can't say I have ever watched an engine running of this type with the chaincase removed to definitely say whether this is normal or not. I assume the chain has been tensioned to provide about 1/8" of free play in the top run?

However, I would be happy to pop in for a cup of tea and have a listen - when you say you live near Newbury, how many miles N, S, E or W from the centre of town?

Thanks spaceman , Iv'e private messaged you .

Sounds a bit "Slack chain" to me----but

Ive adjusted the chain it was quite a lot slacker before and the sound hasn't altered , seems about right now . just wondering whether the chains worn out , its at the limit on tensioner .   Also does the drive sprocket seems quite worn ?

I was just thinking the same thing. If the chain is knackered, when tightened, the rollers will not sit properly in the outer start and finish teeth on the sprockets and that will definitely be noisy.

Let us know what you find but for me I would buy a new chain for starters. I can definitely hear the clattering in the video.

The thing is its not my bike, am recommisioning it for my brother inlaw, has not been used much in the 7yrs He's had it and not at all for1 1/2 years needed  a good sorting to get  running with carb overhaul and gaskets ,fuel lines, filters and  replacement oil lines , Hes selling it but could do with at least knowing what the issue is or sorting it before it gets sold.

B Murphy

Yes agree, at least a new chain installed would eliminate it. Never know, when you take the clutch and geny off you might find the problem noise, but my guess is it'll be the chain. Please keep us all posted on your findings as it's great when things like this get sorted.

Im looking at the crankshaft sprocket teeth, seem a little too pointed for my liking, would like to see a bit of land on top..
If its going to be sold, priced right there will be movement for the buyer who will probably want to  get his spanners out anyway.
not expecting a low mileage superbike would they,

pockets

Thats a fair point , just would be nice to rectify for an easier  and best price sale , but I may well just put the  covers back on and get it up for sale .

Hi Spaceman , did you get my message, doesnt show it as sent when  I  checked .
