Steering Stem Nut

I want to replace a rusting steering stem nut on my 1958 A7SS with a stainless one.

Can I unscrew the steering damper and take it out without everything falling apart ?

You might get the odd friction disc ending up on the floor. Just take a look at how it all goes together before the fateful unwind.
