Hi Guys
Doing a bit of tinkering the weekend, chasing oil leaks and trying to stop the clutch slipping when kicking her over, probably two out of three kicks just clutch slip, how I been spoiled with electric starters!
Now I thought this should be easy, remove rear brake and foot rest and then Clutch cover off. Found a mixture of UNC and UNF bolts of varying length plus one M6 which was epoxied in....
New clutch pack and springs fitted, Heli-coiled the M6 hole out to UNC, tested the other threads with a torque wrench to 9Nm (Newton Metres), Heli-coiled two more holes, my OCD got the better of me, decided to make all the bolts the same length, either drilled and tapped the holes deeper to fit or counter bored the head recess in the clutch cover to allow sufficient threads to show through, one and a half diameter, why did BSA not think of that?
Generous amounts of gasket maker, torqued all the bolts up, filled up with ATF oil, fitted footrest and brake lever, key in, petrol on, a slight tickle of fuel, find TDC, kick, the very satisfying throb, happy days....
But, went to move the bike, not going anywhere, rear wheel stuck.... Bugger, before I remove the clutch case again, thought disconnect chain, still no go, so removed rear QD wheel, what a bugger, the spacer came out fine, the speedo drive however had picked up and was holding the spindle, out with the slide hammer, clean up the speedo drive so that will not happen again. Now the only thing left is the QD carrier, just about to undo the nut holding the carrier on and realized I had not yet set up the rear brake, pushed the arm forward a small amount carrier now moving fine, (almost smiled to myself, what a tw**) the spring pressure alone on the brake arm was enough to hold the rear wheel, reassembled the wheel, set up the brake all seems good now, made a nice cup of tea.
Next day, no oil on garage floor but strong smell of petrol, forgot to turn tap off, errrrrrr
Gently kicked the motor over in case the engine was flooded, seems ok so kicked her into life, went for a ride, A good ride, nothing fell off, no oil leakage, ready for summer
Lesson learned today, remember how you took it apart, turn petrol tap off (probably wasted £10 worth of fuel!)
Thanks for bearing with me
