Hi all,

Would anyone be able to share any photos or advice of how the speedometer is held into the rubber binnacle / mounting cup, and how the binnacle is attached to the mounting plate which bolts to the fork tops please.

Should there be 4 screws to secure the rubber binnacle / cup to the mounting plate? The parts list doesn't list any.

Also should the two studs on the back of the speedometer have nuts and washers on the back face of the rubber. They only barely protrude through.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Bess

Hi,
    If you look here:

https://draganfly.co.uk/product-category/bsa/sparesparts-for-bsa-a50-a65/1969/electrical-69/

Items 6,7,8 and 9 show the necessary fixings etc to hold the cup to the bracket (4 of each per cup). The speedo is a firm push fit into the rubber cup. Remember to remove the speedo trip knob which is removed by a firm pull before fitting the speedo.

The bracket is fixed to the two tappings on the top fork yolk with 2 bolts etc. items 1,2 and 3.

The 2 studs at the back of the speedo should have a washer and nut to hold the speedo workings in the speedo metal cup. These studs are also used as a fixing to earth the instrument internal lamp by a wire fixed by another washer and nut.

Best wishes...

You may have the same problem that I did on the Royal Star. The original rubber cup back in the day was very stiff and held the speedo well just on its own. Ones sold today are as soft and flexible as s**t and the speedo just pops out when steering.
You're right, the studs on the bottom are quite short so I had two 'extensions' made (female to screw on the studs and male to poke through the steel mounting plate) this then bolts the whole lot direct to the mounting plate and problem solved.

Thank you both for the replies.

So originally the speedometer was just pushed into the rubber cup and not secured by the studs?

I may well make some extended nuts to secure the studs if it is not held secure enough by the rubber cup.

Many thanks.

Hi,
Yes, that's why the studs are short. The instruments are fitted in the rubber cups or a metal cup with a grommet to stop the bikes vibration reducing the instruments to their component parts.

If you look at the bracket it has holes big enough to allow the stud with a nut to pass easily through. Some people extend the studs fitting a nut then larger washer and locknut to stop thieves from taking the instruments. I personally wouldn't solidly secure the speedo using these studs unless you can mount an anti vibration component between the frame and bracket like the A10.

Thanks Bess, for explaining the issue of the short studs. I will take heed of your suggestions. I have some of the cups you mentioned on the way!
