Plunger suspension

Just a query I'm in the process of making some replacement parts for my a10 plunger,does anyone know the purpose of the threaded plugs that go into the top of the plunger columns,is it to make it easier for installation ie to align the cutaway at bottom,or some other purpose?,it's the large threaded "special" bolt with a large slot in it.thanks in advance Von.
