engine and frame numbers

I have a 1964 A65 and i always thought the engine and frame number should be the same but they are different . The registration document tallies up with the bike but they are different. i have been told that on the bsa a65 of that year they did not match. is that correct

I believe that from 1966 engine and frame numbers did start to come into line but before that they did not match at all .  This was on all bsa models and not just the A65

My understanding is that until about 1966 all the A50 and A65 frames were prefixed A50.
