So after all these years is there a common place for the oil to leak out ? Alloy case , Mine has a proper seal and a speedy sleeve on the hub adapter (triumph 4 spring)
Is the main problem the felt seal ? Is it not capable,  has anyone screwed on a small deflector over the top like an umbrella  ! I searched and found that neoprene will work better .you guys have probably been though all this . It would be great to learn the best fix for this I used 225cc of oil but I think the clutch basket is a pump , I'm going to add red oil next and hopefully find the source. Cheers

225ml may be too much oil. Have you tried filling the chain case with the overflow screw removed? On the outer alloy cover at the bottom, one of the cover retaining screws is a drain and another acts as an oil level overflow when the screw is removed.

I put about 120ml in my primary. The oil level should be just touching the bottom of the chain.

Don't run the engine with the bike leaned over on the side stand.

A small but annoying source of leaks are the screw holes through drilled in the bottom of the alloy inner cover because oil can migrate out of the screw threads of the drain and overflow screws. I put short plugs with fibre washers on the outside of the inner primary cover to stop these leaks.

Hi thanks for your reply , when I put 225cc of oil into the primary it didn't come out of the level hole , I have a large surface plate and I glued some 80 grit to it and flattened the cover , all the bolt holes I spot faced and then machined down the OD of copper washers , I agree the threads could leak at the back , and thought I might weld them up to make blind holes , I might look at changing to a neoprene washer and  see if there is room to add a deflector over the top of the sliding plate screwed on and silicon sealed , I think the chain basket pumps oil
all around and once the felt is saturated  it just keeps going through  . I think the rollers in the clutch need some oil . Cheers

I seem to remember another machine I owned had a plate running across the top of this area you mentioned.
As the oil is picked up by the chain and thrown up to the top of the chain case, it then runs downwards above the clutch area.,
So I can see why the bike had this plate.
Also, there is generated a good frothing of oil , so a sensibly placed breather may help

Thanks , the plate might be possible , I will strip it down again , hope that hub adapter comes off the taper 🙏 I have to do the front brakes and steering head bearings first . Cheers

My SRM clutch came with a simple felt washer which fits over the back of the clutch adapter. Stops the oil coming out there.

Or could the oil be from the gearbox bearing seal or along the mainshaft where it emerges from the sleeve gear bush?

Not sure what a "speedt sleev" is?

Hi the hub adapter is designed for a wind back , that's why it has a deep scroll in it to pump or draw the oil back into the primary cover,  I fitted a speedy sleeve  for a normal neoprene seal to run on .
