Hi,

There is one for the SA A10, they are available for the pre-unit singles and now for the A65.  What about the plunger framed A10/A7s?
Not as much room as an SA A10 and not quite the same as an A65.  There is a lot out there but is it worth doing one?
Has anyone done one?

the electric start for the a65 includes an upgrade to belt drive but very expensive. once my a65 is running reliably i may consider it.

Hi Eddie,

The plunger has a slightly smaller diameter clutch to the A65 and it is quite snug in the primary case otherwise it looks like a variation could be made.  The cost though would probably be prohibitive.

Isn't the plunger quite low compression? compared to the swing arm model  road rockets etc?

One thing I found with my 823cc motor was with a standard A54 cam (68-103) which was the same profile as the A10 golden flash models, static compression was very high and quite hard to start. I changed the cam to the spitfire type and this dropped static compression dramatically. It usually starts 1st or 2nd kick, but if it doesn't then it buys me a few more kicks before I am worn out if nothing else. But this is more a case of getting my leg high enough onto the kick start lever whilst wearing leather riding trousers.

I know A10's usually are harder to start than the shorter stroke A65, so I think this change wouldn't be too expensive and give the bike a little bit more pep through the revs whilst reducing static compression. Probably wouldn't do anything for top speed.

Hi Allan,

The engine is about 680cc and 8.25:1 and running a spitfire cam and road rocket valve gear so a bit pepped already.
In reality it will probably see off a standard T bolt.  It has Pazon EI to give the best amount of retard for starting and smooth advance.
1st or 2nd kick is usual but it is the 3rd or 4th that causes the problem or having to a quick restart in traffic for some reason.

BUNNERS

The A65 starter kit is manufactured by ARK racing and the sole distributor is Shropshire classic motorcycles (Paul Fotherington) I have purchased one for my TR****h 750cc TR7RV 140R and I was so impressed with the manufacture I have another on order for my 650cc T120R Tr****h Bonneville. Ideal if you are getting on a bit and finding it a pain to start them. I have to say I have no problem staring my A50 & A7SS using the kickstarter at this moment in time. As said before it is a bit dear but well worth it if one wants to keep riding during advanced years.

Hi,

The Ark Eng. kit does look good and considering there is a belt drive and primary cover included it is not that expensive.
As mentioned the plunger clutch is a bit smaller in dia. than the A65 so this could be problem with adaptability.  I have noticed, however the starter ring is attached with screws to the outer edge of the clutch and had had to be cut away to accommodate fitting the clutch plates.  The plunger clutch has a cover that is held on to the outer edge of the clutch with screws.
This cover is not really needed so perhaps the starter ring could be attached in its place.  I think the biggest problem would be making a primary cover to take the starter as the primary cases are not as robust as the A65.
