I don't think BSA published a contemporary volume for the gearbox oil. The M21 - which used a very similar gearbox- specified 1 pint.

However, the gearbox has the correct amount of oil when it is level with the filler spout.  BSA specified engine oil to be used, but thixotropic grease has been recommended on this forum as providing adequate lubrication without leakage - I've not yet tried it myself.

If you go to the club literature pages you'll find a handbook or if you PM me I'll email a copy - it's too big to attach to this post.

The 1934 BSA Sales Brochure states that the engine oil capacity is 3 Pints, but since there is a dipstick on the filler plug, you could use that.
It seems that BSA never quoted the oil capacity for the gearbox. The gearbox is the same as the early hand change M20, but later one's has a different outer cover for the foot change, and moved the filler to the outer cover.
For your information, quoted  capacities for the M20 are all over the place. Haynes state a capacity of 570cc ( 1 Pint ), but then say "Actual capacity 398cc", whatever that means?  The M33 riders book stated 370cc. Castrol Chart shows 398cc.
I did find in one of the BSA handbooks, that the Blue Star gearbox should be filled to 1/2" below the top of the filler with 50 Grade Engine Oil. I found that equated to 450ml. Other books just say fill the gearbox up (presumably to the top).
So if you fill it to the top, or 1/2" below, I doubt if it matters. It's your choice.
Steve.
