Hi all first, what speedo gear box on the rear wheel do I need on 1966 lighting with 19inch wheel speedo is marked SSM 5001/03A 1600 I believe imported from USA,, second my side stand moves about 1/8inch up and down not wear on the pivot bolt but there  seems to be a saddle going round the frame tube should this be welded on and its broke, thanks Roy

Hi,
You have the original speedo (A) is for the US market. The original speedo drive gearbox would be 1.25:1 (15/12) for a 18" wheel. You say you are using is 19" not the original 18", however depending on the tyre diameter chosen you might find there is very little difference to cause an issue.

The stand saddle is probably brazed on, in any event, as its around a tube I would braze it in place ensuring full penetration.

Best wishes...

According to factory catalogues the US East Coast Lightings for 1966 were fitted with 19 inch rear wheels and the USA West Coast Lightnings were fitted with a 18 inch rear wheel.

The Smiths catalogue for 1966 show the Lightnings with speedo gearbox BG5330/111 which is 21:10 ratio but the West Coast models with gearbox BG5330/31 which is 2:1 ratio. both these gearboxes go with the 125 mph speedo which is calibrated at 1600 rear wheel revs per mile and any difference probably minimal.

Thanks for the replies, might have a word with local speedo repair guy I am getting a different reading with two gear boxes I have one 10mph above actual and one 7mph below actual compared with a GPS speedo and ask if he can re calibrate the speedo head, one of the gear boxes is brand new 2/1 cant read the other one as we all know previous owners alter things, thanks Roy
