Hello all, Just fitting the fuel tap back into the tank (1965 B40F) (see photo) when the filter fell off the fitting. What's the best way of securing it? Araldite?   Phil

A new one? I'd be worried that any fix I did would come loose.

Hi,

Aren't these meant to be just a push fit so that they can be replaced if needed?   Super glue is not suitable but something like JB Weld or Plastic Metal would do.

Dave.

When I replaced one or was just a friction fit so I used nothing to "glue" it in.
If the replacement is loose, then I would probably stretch the base with some needle nosed pliers to expand it to fit. I can see my filter when looking through the filler cap to check it is still in place.

you will probably see the trace of original solder if its old enough
I always solder, apart from anything else its ethanol proof!
Newer style weren;t soldered

So I take it Araldite is not suitable?

Any disadvantages to soft soldering it?

Actually, looking closely at the filter(see photo) it looks like there has been some kind of adhesive used in the past. There appear to be the remnants of it on the end 1/8 inch or so, and also along its length, presumably at a seam. So I am a bit tempted to use some kind of glue. Maybe Steelstik? Of course doing that would mean removing the old stuff off the end - not sure what would do that, maybe carb cleaner?   Any further thoughts please anyone?  Phil

Hi Phil,
          Personally I would solder it.

Tin the end of the gauze and the inner edge of the tap first, whilst there's still heat in the tap offer them up in the position you are most happy with, heat and add some solder as the fuse together.

Best wishes...

Hi,

Does this tap have a nylon or neoprene insert?  Will it melt?

Dave.

Bess

Hi Dave,
Looks like a removable brass reducing bush.

Best wishes...

I like the idea of solder. Trouble is my little iron might not provide enough heat for the tap, not sure. A flame would be ideal I guess, but I don't have one.

I don't see any nylon or neoprene inserts.

What's a removable brass reducing bush?

Thanks Bess. Ordered.   Phil

Update: I got a torch (thanks again Bess) and soft-soldered the filter to the tap. It was quite tricky, for example because the fine copper mesh is capable of taking much less heat than the relatively bulky tap. Anyway, I think it's okay? Not pretty, I know, but hopefully it will work. Please see photos. I'd appreciate any thoughts (and I promise I won't be offended!)     Phil
