Greetings.

Are there two different lengths of the early type mounting pillars. I imagine the length was changed when the front sprocket shield was fitted but I can only find one length,, The ones I have, if I do them up tight  go through and foul the crank. ( I know I can cut them but I dont wish to go down that line. If I pack them then the stator sits proud of the rotor.

Help

Hi Mike,
            A65,

1962 to 1963 years are 3-5/8" long, 1964/65 are 3-3/4" long.

Best wishes...

My inclination is to fit an original type mounting ring.., that I don't have at the moment. So we'll see.

I do have a second issue with fitting the front sprocket:- without the "collar" between the bearing and the sprocket the front and clutch sprocket line up perfectly. With the collar the front sprocket is "proud" and they don't line up.

Anybody got any ideas before I go mad and start machining the collar.  I am using a four spring clutch. This is a new one on me.(There is always the possibility that I have never took enuf notice previously).

I had a mix of early and late parts so I ended up having a tenth of an inch machined off my front sprocket.
I would have simply used a different size spacer but my bearing fit on the crank was a bit loose and I locktited it and also locktited the spacer to the bearing!

Thanks for that, it's about what I thought. I too have a mixture. But mine is still loose at the mo. So I think I'll have one made to fit (give my son something to do as it outside my scope) and we'll make it approx 1/10th narrower. Then I'll still have an original.

I now have a proper alternator mounting ring so my pillars maybe correct Ho Ho Ho?

I have gone down the same route and because of the role of the spacer VV oil seal, have machined the inside of the sprocket. Offered up is fine but when fully in position may require to be shimmed. No problem.

So yours is the better way to go.. We'll see.
