Hi Mick,

The bikes sounds good.  It is hard to tell about 500 or 650 as the heads and cylinders are pretty much identical from the outside, the difference being in the bore.  Some say the 500 is a smoother and nicer engine and will be more economical.  I suppose the proof is in the riding.  If you like it then it is right.

I've got both and would agree that the 500 seems smoother. But the comparison may be a bit off because I m running the 500 with 7.5:1 pistons. Lovely to start. Whereas the 650 has normal 9.1 ???..

I'm just rebuilding a 650 with 7.5's so maybe that will be equally smooth and easy to kick.

Hi,

I ran my 650 with 7.5:1 compression for many thousands of miles and it was quite smooth.  When I fitted 9:1 pistons reduced in weight to match the 7.5:1 pistons it was still quite smooth probably because of dynamic balancing.  The most noticeable difference was that the engine sounded much more crisp and this was matched by the performance which improved.  So with 7.5:1 expect slightly flatter performance.

Yes it's running real nice now that I've adjusted the timing so it starts properly from cold, I took it for a run down the road yesterday and it's smooth and powerful.  Today I checked the plugs and they are not sooty any more, they look about spot on. I was going to take a look at the carb to cure the soot problem but there's no need now, all I did was alter the timing .    I had always assumed dirty plugs were a symptom of carburettor problems, live and learn. :)

I went to register the bike today and came up against an unexpected problem, the Saskatchewan governments computer does not recognize BSA as a make of motorcycle, but they will add it to the list.  My BSA will be the only registered one here, which is kind of odd considering Sask is almost twice the size of the UK. That's probably why the plate was not taken. :)

Hi Mick,

Being the only one must feel a bit special.  Just think, you could form a Sask. Branch of the BSAOC and have 100% local membership, full attendance on runs and club nights, no arguments.  Sounds like paradise, maybe.
It looks pretty flat where you are with hills and mountains a few days ride away I would imagine but BSAs were made for all roads everywhere.

Nice bike! Dog needs a helmet.

Hi Mick being that your bike had been exported from the uk does it have a 18 or 19 inch rear wheel if its a 19inch do you know what ratio the speedo drive gear box is, thanks Roy

I particularly like the statement. "The system doesn't recognize BSA but they are going to add it"

Can you imagine if it was DVLA.  (That is a generalization cos I don't think DVLA do it by type)

I've since found out that there are quite a few BSA's in Sask, it was just the old woman in the office did not know how to work the computer.  I do have the only BSA number plate though.  :)   It's registered now.

Yes Saskatchewan is flat, the southern bit where I live is rolling prairie for the most part.

I have had many dealings with the DVLA over the years, luckily for me the those days are in the past. It's a different world and a different mindset here.
