Captain Mike

Hello every body

I am new to the forum and  have purchased a BSA A10  1957 Plunger that has been off the road for over forty years, was rebuilt in the last four years and is now ready to get back on the road when the good weather returns,

I have been going over the bike to check everything out before I tried to start it , found the carb float chamber leaking badly, petrol taps from the tank leaking badly and the timing a long way out, anyway, after removing the timing side cover to adjust the ignition timing I found the oil pump area full of oil, does this mean the pump is leaking ? is this common and if not what can I do to stop it, My thoughts are that the area where the pump sits should be dry

Any advise appreciated

Cheers

You might find that it has wet sumped and the bottom of the engine is full of oil. Remove the plate at the underneath of the engine and allow it to drain into a container. There is normally about a tablespoon of oil in the cover when removed. If you do find that the engine has wet sumped check the oil level in the chain case as it may have flowed through the crank shaft seal.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.
The inside of the timing case will get covered in oil as it is connected to the crank case which has oil splashed about to oil the cam and timing gears so the pump will be oily if the engine has been run.  It is difficult to tell if the pump is leaking at it may do so when the engine is running and there is oil pressure.  I suppose that if you clean all the oil away and turn the engine over with the outer cover off and without starting it, you may see if there is a leak from the joint or the body of the pump but this may prove inconclusive.
There have been a few threads about oil pumps so if you do a search you will find some hints and tips.

Thanks all

I will check the pump when the timing case is off and I can turn the engine over again, I only filled it up with oil the day before so not convinced it has wet sumped  already, There was a lot of oil just in the oil pump compartment my thinks this is too much, I have sent my payment in to become a member and look forward to chatting on these forums which are invaluable

Had vintage bikes and cars in the past so not a novice but eager to learn of everybody else

Thanks
