Hi all,

Why does it seem to be so difficult to get hold of a decent set of exhaust pipes and silencers for my 1966 BSA A65 Lightning?

In the past I have had major problems with Armour products and my experience with them has led to me not wanting to use them ever again.

The correct pipes for my bike are BSA part numbers 68-2789 & 68-2791 with the fixing lugs for the 68-2794 tie bracket. The silencers are BSA part number 68-2733.

I have read lots of stuff on various forums about the pipes and silencers and the company that gets the best vote for the pipes is L F Harris but they seem impossible to contact and when you look for dealers they are impossible to find.

The company that gets the best vote for silencers is Brituro but once again they seem difficult to contact.

No one seems to have any stock and no one says where the parts are sourced from?

Can anyone help with recommendations for purchasing these items?

Thanks

it could be that a lot of people are still working from home due to covid and some suppliers are on reduced staff.
the other thing regarding suppliers is that as Ive said in the past, many dealers might use one supplier and once stocks are exhausted no one has any.
regarding quality, Harris should be good and would hope SRM could supply good quality, but others may source cheaper ones.

as for Brituro they seem to have a farcebook profile open from 9am to 3.30pm

The biggest problem I have found with silencers is excessive noise from them.
I bought Armour products in the past and I think they are very well made but often the fit is poor or brackets are in the wrong place.. Also had problems from various suppliers with downpipes and invariably have to tweak them or reject them.
I don't understand why the manufacturers cannot make well fitting pipes and silencers. If they set up there jig using some well fitting old pipes, any pipes made should fit.
Sorry I can't help you - just had to have a rant!

I've just ordered a single silencer for my 1965 Lightning (siamese system) from Brituro 01274 299279, and I think from what he said that he might still have some twin pipe silencers for a Lightning.

Might be worth a phone call if you are still looking Kev....

Thanks for that Dave, I'll chase them up.

I tried ringing the number 01274 299729 but git no answer. I checked it out to see if there was a typing error and discovered that it is not actually Brituro's number but a company called British Motorcycle Parts, who appear to be based in Bradford. They don't even list a silencer for an A65 on their web site?

Bummer, I obviously followed an ad, after typing in Brituro.... Wot an eejit.

Oh well, I've learnt to live with my mistakes as I get older.

The silencer came from 'British MC Parts' today.

It looks excellent and fits well.... Phew.

Won't be able to report on noise or performance until the build is finished.... Which is some time off.

But I'm pleased with what I've bought.

Yes, Brituro are based in Birmingham I believe. They are manufacturers and only sell through the trade.
