Er, rear wheel not out yet, but I do have a vapour blasted Mikuni carb fitted and connected to the twist grip.....

Another question if I may: do you know the dimensions of the rod that goes through the Siamese exhaust pipe holes? (some sort of brace)

Likewise, how many nuts are used ?

Many thanks,
Dave.

Well I've stripped the rear wheel and brake drum down and the only issues that came to light were: the spring is the wrong type (as suggested.... Any idea of the correct part number please?)
And the spring retaining web is badly cracked... (now being welded)

On the good side the brake plate does fit close to the drum. The reason it looks like there is a big gap is simply down to the drum being Black. (Is it possible that the sprocket is on the wrong way round? (I fitted it so that the sprocket recess sit neatly over the drum ring))

Next question (please) is 'what is the chain size please'? (21 Tooth front sprocket and 47 Tooth rear sprocket?)   (Number of links?, size of links? and can an 'X' link chain be fitted?)

Many thanks,
Dave.

P.S. The exhaust tension rod is 12 inches x 8mm (ground down and threaded to 5/16 BSF at each end. I used stainless rod)

You need a 530 chain.  Forget about O ring X ring - too wide

I have the same 21/47 and I think I bought a 107 and it worked as is but best to have chain tools.

geraldhattrick75

Thanks N....

Chain now ordered. (110 links... Have angle grinder- can adjust)

Thanks again,

Dave.

OK, after a lot of faffing around trying to establish the correct spacers for the rear wheel (alloy brake plate, no rear wheel speedo drive and goodness knows what year the, BSA in house, bikes mods would put it at), we've managed to arrive at a set-up that seems correct, albeit doesn't seem to look like any of the official diagrams.  So thank you to everyone who proffered advice.

The chain run seems ok, but I'll know for sure when I fit the original chaincase.......

On another note the Boyer Bransden ignition kit (00052)came today so I will make fitting that my next stage of progression.

This lightning is a 12v pos earth system. The diagrams (and text) refers to the use of 'two 6v coils in series for high comp engines'- which I would have thought the Lightning is......

So does this mean I need to get two 6v coils?

Is there anything else that I need to be aware of when setting this system up?

I hope you don't mind my asking.

Thanks,
Dave.

Two 6 volt coils are best.  12 volt coils work but not optimal.

geraldhattrick75

Thanks very much for that 'N', I'll order two of these then: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triumph-BSA-Norton-Genuine-Lucas-6v-Ignition-Coil-LU47275-Free-Uk-Postage/284030646894.

(I've ordered a solid state regulator/ rectifier for a 2 lead stator)

Thanks again,
Dave.

geraldhattrick75

I'm just wondering the best location to fit the: new ignition pack (possibly inside the outer timing case?), regulator (somewhere in a breeze) and coils (adjacent to the carb intake?)?

Any suggestions would be appreciated......
Many thanks,
Dave.

LightningAndStarfire

I think electronics is preferably attached as cool as possible and somewhat protected from vibration. Boyer electronics are potted I recall so should be less sensitive but anyway.

geraldhattrick75

Thanks for that....

I'll look at fitting the Boyer Bransden ignition module and Regulator/ Rectifier somewhere between the two side covers (when I eventually get em)- along with the two coils....

Regards,
Dave

Reg/Rect may fit under your battery box.  Coils behind carbs is the stock I believe.  Some like to put the coils close to the plugs so under the tank or on the downtube.

Hi,

Be a bit careful fitting the regulator under the battery box.  I did hear that the chain guard can hit it on full bump.
I am not sure if it would work with the twin carbs of a Lightning but I used a twin lead coil and fitted the regulator in place of the other coil.

Thanks guys, I'll keep my eye on that potential chain guard problem.

Where did you fit the ignition control box?

Incidentally, this build is for a single carb head. (I'll do the twin head later... (later is, of course, being a euphemism for 'less broke'))

DAVE BRADY

Hi,

With a single carb it is easy with a twin lead coil as there is plenty of room for the reg. box.  I have the ignition box secured under a nice tight battery strap - easy to get to and replace if necessary.  This was me being a bit lazy as I couldn't be bothered making a clip for it otherwise that could have gone between the coil and regulator but only just.
As you will not have the rectifier etc. under the seat you can sit it under there.

Dave.
