side stands

I have a side stand on my 1958 M21 which is obviously not the original, (if there ever was one), but no matter how much I tighten it up when I use it the weight of the bike makes the stand slide round the frame and the bike falls over. Is there a cure for this or is it that the M21's are just too heavy for side stands?

There was a side stand just like that on my 1953 M33 when I got it; it wouldn't hold the bike up for a moment. I eventually realised that it was a stand for a 1" frame tube when it should have been a stand for a 7/8" one. I found a piece of metal between the clamp and the frame tube to try and adapt it, but the stand had been so tightened up in the past that both halves of the clamp were distorted; making a spacer to fit between the clamp and the frame would be well nigh impossible.

I have toyed with the idea of making a bracket so the side stand can be fixed to the front engine mounts, using just the bottom half of the clamp.

I have one of these on my M21. I think the trick is to make sure everything is very clean before you start tightening the bolts (there are also different sizes, as Rog1 says, so make sure you have one for the diameter of your tubing). And not to start off with too great an angle of lean that exerts too much pressure.

I have these on a few bikes and on one I did drill a small home in the frame and fit a pop rivet between the halves of the clamp to stop it rotating. Worked so far.

On my rigid B33 I resorted to this from an Enfield Bullet. Had to make a plate and couple of studs but it works a treat and can be removed easily.

This company (which I haven't tried) makes threaded studs to your requirements:

I'll give them a try if I end up putting the stand on the front engine mounts, as Pete C has done.
