Hi Having trouble with the timing on 1959 Shooting Star. Having set up the timing as per the book it runs very well and sounds good, how ever run it round for a while turn it off and leave it for a few minutes restart and back to square one. Just wonder if im missing something or could it be a problem else were. many thanks any info would be very welcome.

Has the mag been rebuilt ? they get a bit moody when they get old

Hi,

When you recheck the timing has it moved?  If so then the pinion on the mag is shifting slightly or the points could moving.

Dave.

;D "moody" is a great descrition and made me smile.
Don't you wish they'd just stop working altogether.

.... and if the timing still looks right then might it be heat-related? I had a problem with the mag on my M21 that turned out to be due to general deterioration of the innards but for a long while it seemed to spark fine when it was in a good mood but not at other times (eventually this became worse and it was easier to relate it to both heat and compression).

If the timing is actually moving after resetting check that the points assembly still has the locating key on it, they do break offwhich allows the assembly to move.

Check that the taper on the mag shaft and the mag pinion are OK and not damaged.
