Hi, I have 3 prewar BSA's all of which have no lubrication to their exhaust valves. The point of using cast iron valve guides is that they are supposed to be self lubricating. Phosphor bronze guides are certainly not self lubricating. I have used spray grease on the exhaust valve stems of all my vintage BSA's for many years which reduces valve guide wear. I just give the valve stems a few squirts before i go on a run which may be up to 120/150 miles in a day & have never had any problems. Hope this helps

Thanks Alan, it always helps to hear from guys who can give hands on info. This isn't my first pre war open valve BSA, but it's the first one that seized a new guide within a few minutes. I don't think I will ever know why, but I'm sticking with cast iron guides.
