I am trying to remove the Lucas Magdyno on my 1935 W35-6  with a 500cc sidevalve engine but cannot get it to come out of the engine housing. I have several technical books but cannot find any information on how to get the magneto to come out.  As I cannot see what is happening inside I don't want to pull too hard in case I damage something.

I believe the shaft of the Magdyno may be connected  with a tapered shaft and the Brightsparks website suggests that I will need a special tool to remove it but none of these tools, which are available on E Bay, say that they are suitable for my bike.

Can anyone help me to resolve this problem?

I have tried to remove the circular slotted access panel on the crankcase that is centred on the magneto to see inside but this is stuck after 36 years in a damp garage and nearly 60 years in storage. If this needs to come out then any suggestions to help me remove it would also be welcome. As the slot is already damaged a piece of wood and a hammer currently seems like the best option!

You will need to either remove the slotted inspection or the timing cover. You can then remove the 5/16 BSF nut on the end of the magneto  gear. You will see two 1/4 bolt holes on the magneto gear to attach a puller with a centre bolt. Take care not to damage the thread on the magneto shaft when using the puller.
You will need to reset the timing when resembling.

Thanks for your response. I had hoped that I would Not have to remove the circular cover but at least I now know what to do. I will buy the special tool and see if I can get the cover off.
