Hi guys, I have just stripped the front forks down on my 1967 A65 Lightning and when I come to rebuild them I want to fit some new fork oil seal holders. Preferably stainless steel but chrome will have to do if I can't find any stainless ones.

I have been searching online and almost all the oil seal holders that I find are listed with the BSA part number 29-5310. I cannot find this part number in any of my part books.

The part number for the oil seal holder in the BSA Parts Book for year 1966 is 68-5132 & 41-5142. For 1967 it is 41-5142 and for 1968 it is 97-2514.

Where does the part number 29-5310 come from?

As an example; on the Britishbikebits (Burton Bike Bits) webshop their chrome fork oil seal holder, listed to fit BSA A65 from 1962-1967 is part number 29-5310.

Can anyone clear up the conflict in part numbers for me?

Thanks, Kev Ev

29 5310 is  the A10 part, about 5 inches long.

68 5132 is 1966 part, very short, not much longer than its diameter.

97 2514 has a substantial circlip onto which the rubber gaiter fits, about 4 inches long. (photo below)

41 5142 is long version but dont know the length.

The thread is the same for all.

Thanks for that information Chris.

I can only assume that the 29-5310 is pretty much the same thing as the 41-5142. On the parts list illustration it looks identical to what I see in suppliers photographs of the 29-5310 and scale-wise it looks the same length.

If they all have the same thread then they must all be interchangeable.

I bought a pair of the long ones in stainless steel when I originally restored my bike in the early 90's. Unfortunately they don't have the two cut outs inside to use the tool on and I originally screwed them on hand tight with a leather strap and loctite applied.

Pretty stupid to leave this off the holders but I wasn't as wise about the things at that time, or I would have sent them back.

Even with a bit of heat they refused to budge and I ended up having to use a large Stillson pipe wrench to get the buggers off, which of course damaged them. Hence the need for a new pair.
