Hi, hoping someone can help me please.
I am putting back together my 1970 Royal Star which I took apart about 20 years ago. The issue I have is the speedo mounting as the 2BA studs from the original magnetic speedo do not extend far enough into the mounting plate to put a nut on. The rubber binnacle is a new one I bought during a stalled rebuild about 5 years ago, I can't remember where I got it but it does have a reinforced base which I believe the better ones do. I can think of 3 possible reasons:-
1. The base of the Binnacle is to thick stopping the speedo sitting low enough for the studs to extend through the base although the chrome bezel looks to sit at the right height to the top of the binnacle.
2. There should be sleeve nuts fitted although the parts book doesn't mention any part number for a nut there.
3. It is correct as is and is gripped by the binnacle and the studs are there just for location and its design intent to afford the speedo some rubber mounting against vibration.
In any case can anyone recommend a good supplier of the binnacle as this one seems a bit baggy around the chrome bezel or are they all like that.
Many thanks

Hi Colin,

Number 3 I think.

Dave.

A bit of 3 and 2, the speed should self house within the rubber, however if you were to turn up some
Sleeve nuts you could fit them on to give the speedo a bit of security. My mate and I both found our speedo cables removed from the bikes when we stopped at a motorway services a few years ago. I'd imagine someone got disturbed but had they not someone might have made off with them. So some
Sleeve nuts are a good idea. The modern rubbers do also stretch causing the Cable to push the instrument back out of the housing. The ones on mine aren't that old and they are going like this.

Many thanks Dave and Allan for your replies, It does make sense really as it would be counter productive to mount your delicate speedo in a big bit of rubber only to bolt it down hard to a metal plate. I may turn up some sleeve nuts with a grommet underneath to still allow movement but to give a bit of security as Allan has suggested.
