Gear Oil from Outer Cover Bolt Hole!

I know oil leaks are an accepted non optional extra in the British bike world but this one seems a bit strange....

I have the engine out on a stand and have removed the outer covers in order to give them a good clean. At the same time I replaced the gearbox oil. I left it overnight with the outer covers still off and there was oil beneath the engine.

If I push a bolt into the lower rear bolt hole for the outer cover on the RHS clean oil is squeezed out!

Any ideas please?!!

Hi,
Not sure which bike you have, however some bolts/screws pass through the outer covers into the inner covers. These sometimes are straight through into the crankcases and gearbox chambers.

Best wishes...

As per the other reply, not sure which bike you have. I always put jointing compound on the outer cover of my 500 Triumph Unit engine. Oil will find it's way to the outer cover. Some manufacturer's list the amount of oil required for gearboxes, and some modern experts claim that too much oil is used ?

Thank you both. I have put the outer cover on and so far no sign of oil.... Either the bolts are 'plugging' or perhaps it's all gone? The engine is a 1964 C15 that's new to me and it leaked a fair bit before I took it apart but I didn't know where from. I'll redo it with some sealant and wait for the next emergence.....

Thanks again and I hope my 'adventure' with a BSA will give me the chance to help someone else in the future!

All back together and behaving..... Learning some great stuff on this build!
