I do not have the the wire fastening section on mine. I saw a complete batter carrier on ebay at the weekend, but did not bid  as I didn't want to take the tinware off to swap it over.

Anyone know if the wire fastening section can just be detached and swapped over to one in situ ? ( if so I'll keep my eye out for a second hand original part.)

Also what's the best arrangement to fit with out the original fastening.  I presume the battery needs to be cushioned a little to avoid cracking the battery case. currently I've wrapped the battery sides in bubble wrap, with a webbing strap around that. I'll replace this with some thin rubber or thin packing closed cell foam find when I find some)

Yup, I just loosened the tinware "hooks" a bit with a screwdriver and put new wire in. My battery's smaller than standard, so I made up a strap out of a strip of old inner tube. That gives me space and flexibility for some thin foam padding.

Also, if it's only the wire that's failed (as most have) then it's really easy to make new ones up with a couple of thin welding rods or, as Rupert Ratio suggests, a wire coat hangar.

Normally, the bottom of the wire strap is retained inside the bent over bracket at the back of the battery shelf. The original bracket might even have been spot welded in place. The other end of the wire strap simply hooks over the two bent over hooks at the top of the battery carrier to allow the top of the strap to be easily detached to facilitate battery removal.

I've made up a wire strap as per RR but the original locking clasp has some subtle bends in it to stop it springing over are difficult to reproduce. Unless you're after authenticity, it's probably a lot easier to use a rubber strap - if necessary, you can buy a hook for the normal types of strap to allow you to hook the bottom of it under the back of the carrier.

Thanks for pointing me at Rupert R, a copy of which I have and should have looked at !  Looks like I can make the missing clip and wire sections with RR's helpful measurements and drawings.

Just to close off this post ( for anyone later) I have uploaded a photo of the complete carrier.
