Hi all,
I'm using my Goldstar 650 for touring and one issue that's been bugging me for some time is how damned short that side stand is. Now this shouldn't really matter that much un der normal circumstance but, loaded up with camping gear, kitchen sink etc. for a European trip, it doesn't feel so secure at such an angle especially as our drive has steep slopes on it and sometimes you just have to have the sidestand pointing downhill. So I've been looking for sidestand extenders. They range in price online from as little as £3.00 (hmmm, how good can that really be?) up to £80.00 (hmmm, and they're having a laugh!). Now, most of them frankly don't actually extend the sidestand very much at all (i.e. make the bike sit more upright), they're more like pre-fitted stand pads for soft ground. I could really do with the stand being up to an inch longer - I normally park it outside at home with a quarry tile under the stand to get the "uprightness" I need for loading luggage etc..
Can any GS650 owner offer suggestions based on their own experience of such things?

DAVE BRADY

Hi,

Not a GS owner but I had a similar problem with an A65.  I needed about 1" so I welded some 1" od thick wall steel tube. If the GS stand has a flat foot then use some square section instead.  Lighter than a solid lump but strong enough.

I had this on another bike. I got a 3" dia bit of 1" ply and cut a recess to fit the stand foot. Obviously you have to carry it about and get adept and dropping it in the right place, but you only take it when you expect to need it.

I modified mine by adding 10mm and a nice fillet of weld

Thanks Guys, glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks this is a problem.
That weld is a tidy job, must say. I've already got a portable wooden foot (a routed out piece of oak off-cut, with elastic cord!) but could do without the faff of positioning it and hauling it up every time.
In fact, after posting above, I decided to purchase a bunch of cheap alloy feet (multibuy x3 on eBay - less than a tenner in total so won't be too expensive a fail if that's what it is) which I might be able to stitch together with longer allen screws and/or modify with some JB weld to make a more secure fit (I'm afraid grown-up welding is beyond my means, financially or competency-wise, TBH). I'll report back if my bodge is successful.

Update: These are the alloy feet I got: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/147273911262?var=445712216077.
Each piece came with two plates that screw together, three allen screws (metric), an Allen key, and a piece of rubber packing, which I didn't use. I used longer versions of the Allen screws which to sandwich two base plates together with a cap on top but added a 6mm piece of hi-density foam rubber to pack the top section out to stop it wobbling on the stand foot. As a proof of concept it works OK and I think it'll stay on the stand for a while. It only adds 12mm to give a slightly more upright stance on the stand - could have done with more but it's a start.
(I'd have posted pictures but can't figure out how to attach them, the "insert an image" button requires picture URLs,  :-[ )

Those are a bit of a bargain, what colour did you choose? ;D

createscript

Sadly, metallic blue!!!! Should've gone for black. Don't know what possessed me...  :-[

Finally here are the pics - drag and drop wasn't working at the time. I've ordered some more, see if I can get an even more upright stance.

Its a Red bike ::).  Do they let you choose you own clothes ;D
(Still it does look well made and I may get one, how does it sit when the stand is up?

createscript

Ok, yes they do let me choose my own clothes, hence no pictures of me on my bike.  ;D

I ordered a 3 unit set with red (metallic red though, which clashes just as much, so I actually prefer the contrast of the blue when all said and done). I'm waiting for longer 25mm Allen screws to be delivered to put the stack together.

Attached is a pic of the stand in the raised position - doesn't foul anything, and a stack of three should be fine too, when I get to fit it.
