Hi, would anyone know where i could beg, borrow, steal a 61-3824 fork tool?!

Hi,

If this is to pull the legs back up in to the top yolk then it is quite easy to make one if you have a top nut to sacrifice.

Grind off the hex to make it round.  Drill a hole in the centre and use some stud bar with a nut fixed to one end, a large washer and some nuts to pull the stanchions up in to the yolk.
Failing that, I have known it to be done by screwing a brush handle in to stanchion and pulling it up.

Dave.

Thanks, I will give it a go

I tried the broom handle method but I didn't have the strength to pull the stanchion up.  In then I got the kit from Classic Bikes.  I'd wasted hours trying to do the job without the tool, with it I did both stanchions in about 10 mins.
Years ago I turned down a top nut and screwed a rod in, but the tool is much better.  I'm thinking of fitting new steering head bearings so it will pay for itself.
If you are near Slough you are welcome to borrow it.

No need to touch the stanchions if you're renewing the head set.

Its 6 and two 3s.  I may fit springs too, there's some wear on the current ones.  In the past I've assembled the forks up-side down then put the whole lot in one go but its a bit heavy working alone.

Just replaced my fork springs, and getting the fork legs through the yokes far enough to engage the top nut is difficult.More so if like me you fit progressive springs.
I used a brush handle to line the legs up with the top yoke, and then used a "Spanish Windlass" to pull the fork leg up.
This is simply a length of strong rope one end looped to the fork bottom or mudguard hole.Loop the other ends over one of the yokes, tie together and twist the rope with a piece of brush handle to pull the stansion into the top yoke.
