Morning all, after several start and stops with the rebuild of this bottom half of the Thunderbolt engine I have a problem!...if I use uke brand new shim cup with no shims the crankshaft will not turn freely and is well and truely stuck, if I remove the shim cup and rebuild with no shims I have a nice turning crankshaft with 10 thou end float.
Question, can I use shims without the cup.
I have the correct Hoffmann RM.11L ball bearing and the correct thrustwasher fitted over the timing side bush.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
P.s if I lay the shim cup on the bearing the sides of the cup foul the race cage and it fouls the race of the new 2 part bearing causing a jam too.

Firstly i would check all the bearings and bushes are really fully pressed home, especially the TS bush.  There could be 5 thou there that will solve the problem.
The retainer is there because the shims on A10s would break up and fall into the sump.  The way to stop this was to avoid thin shims and so builders would measure the shims then make one think one the correct thickness
If you can build it with a single shim i would say yes but if its several thin ones there's a good chance one may fail.
Can you reduce the lip on the cup and use a thin shim in the cup?
This happens if the bearing spins on the shaft, is it a tight fit?

Sorry I should have said that this is an A65 and all bearings and bushes are firmly seated.

Bearing and bush are a nice tight fit in the case, I had thought of making up a holder so I could put it in the lathe and reduce the cups lip length.

Maybe the wrong shim cup for the pattern of bearing used? There were 2 different cups and shim sets. See below service sheet from 1972.

Thank you, I reckon your right, I took the cup off and added shims to the crankshaft and got the correct endfloat (.002") took out the bearing and put the shims in front of the bearing pressed it back in! job sorted. I have had no end of trouble sourcing some parts because of all the little changes and have come to the conclusion if it doesn't fit..make it.
Thank you all, now before I fit it back together....sludge trap!.
Happy days.

Well done Julian for remembering that service sheet!  That's a forum working at its best.  I rebuilt an OIF A65 and don't recall that but its very important.
