Good evening  would  anyone  be able to  tell me if l can use 7/16 nuts for  the cylinder head  of 5/8 AF spanner  size ( fo ease of getting  a ring  spanner  for ease of access) instead  of the 11/16 AF Spanner size.
I gather  the larger size  gives better  clamping  force but  with  the thick  washers  would this  make any difference.
Many thanks for any  suggestions
Dave

What you suggest is feasible but as far as I'm aware there are no off-the- shelf unf nuts of that description.
It would be fairly simple to make some on a lathe starting with 5/8" a/f hex bar.
You would then be able to make the underside flat rather than chamfered which would help to spread the load over a wide area of the washer.

Thanks for your response nuts of 7/16  are available but  not  sure  of where they came from, my mate  has a small engineering  firm and  let me have  some.  However  l can find  out  hopefully  where these came from.
And l will try  and  give  details.
With this in mind I can assume  its OK to use these nuts rather  than the 11/16 size.
Thanks again for your help  it's greatly appreciated

Hi,

Is it worth modifying a ring spanner to fit better? Grinding off just a bit can make all the difference to the ease of use without really weakening it.  The torque required is not too great so a reasonable quality spanner would do.

Dave.

Hi,

Another thought.  Are they the same thread as late A65 cylinder 12 point base nuts? Or is that type of nut available in the correct size?

Dave.

Thanks  Dave I am not  sure  on that  perhaps  they are and  l will look  in to that.
But  maybe  better to better  to use the correct proper  size  nuts and  grind a spanner  to suit.
Much appreciated for your help
