Advice please. 1959 Gold flash with Bob Newby belt and clutch.
I had the box rebuilt years ago. Done about 3k miles. Can't take it back to the company who did it as it no longer exists.
All working well except.......It doesn't like changing down from 3rd to 2nd. It either finds a neutral or drops into 1st. It seems that if I've been riding in 3rd for a few hundred yards it's got a good chance of shifting into 2nd more cleanly but if I'm shifting down more quickly it doesn't want to go. Changes up just fine.

I'm going to have a go at it but need to know what I should be looking for. Any suggestions please.
I really don't want to have to take the gear box out if I can help it.
Cheers, Rick.

Most of the gearbox issues I've encountered on my A10's have turned out to be clutch issues, actually. I use Bob Newby clutches and find them very good but they have to be set up carefully. I use a dial gauge on the pressure plate and try to get it properly balanced. Third to second on an A10 is usually the clunkiest change and the one most people complain about. Spotting problems in the gearbox itself isn't always easy but it's worth checking for play and wear in all aspects of the selector mechanisms. The problem is unlikely to be anything to do with the gears themselves.

Thanks for that. I'll have a careful attempt at the clutch again before I open up the gearbox. Got a few other jobs to do first but will let you know how I get on. Cheers, Rick.

CheezaBeeza, thanks for your comments re clutch adjustment. I'm not questioning your comments but want to pick your brains.
The clutch isn't slipping or dragging and I was very careful to try to get the tension screws equal.
How does the condition of the clutch operation influence a single gear change and none of the others.
I will have a look at the clutch before I tackle the gearbox.
Cheers, Rick.
