i seem to be aking dumb questiuns on a daily basis but if you're not sure just ask.

so i'm intending to start putting things together this weekend. think ive got it sussed with a lot of advice but theres just one more thing i'd forgotten about.

theres a 2 into 1 exhaust on the bike but its loose (to my mind) in the heads. theres no gaskets shown in the drawings and i've been advised that exhaust cement/paste shouldn't be used but no reason why

the joint in the exhaust down by the right engine mount looks like theres just a clamp to hold the two bits tightly

what is the recommended way of making them airtight? or doesn't it matter

Let's answer your last 4 words 1st.
Yes it matters, as airless will give you popping and banging in the exhaust on the overnight.

Simple fix , I use clear bathroom silicone sealer smeared around the pipes where I push into the head.
Seems to work a treat and surprisingly resilient.
Makes a seal until the carbon builds up

i would have thought myself that they would need to be sealed but the advice i had was the opposite.
i was told to brace exhausts so they were being forced back into the heads and that would suffice. exhaust assembly paste would be my choice

im sorry , just re-read my reply
AIRLESS should have read AIRLEAKS do matter

and OVERNIGHT should read OVERRUN

silicone works fine for me

I have tried gun gum or suchlike , but it can build up crusty lumps which can prevent sealing if left in there when you do any dismantling in the future

cornishbob

got the jist of it mate. i have to re read what i've written three times to make sure my drugs are working

Ordinary bathroom silicone for me too - works much better than the expensive high temperature stuff.

I have at least four tubes of expensive exhaust sealant none of them work any better than a tube of silicone from the builders merchants.
At the bottom of a very steep learning curve. More dumb questions to follow

cornishbob

looks like it'll be silicone then. might use bathroom stuff then it'll be waterproog in the rain

any particular one? or just any

AltcarBob

I just used the cheapest at my local builders merchants last year it cost me about £2.50 iirc.
