A65 QD Rear Wheel

Hi All

I posted a few weeks ago asking for advice on my 1968 Lightening project.

My initial enquiry was regarding front and rear wheels as my project (basket case) came with a front wheel off the earlier type A65 and the rear wheel from an A10, so not a great start into my BSA career.

So, after some very useful advice on here I sourced a twin leading shoe at great expense for the front and what I thought was the correct QD wheel and brake for the rear.

The front I am missing a spindle which I thought I could pick up cheaply from eBay (wrong!) but my main concern is the rear wheel.

The wheel was advertised as an A65/A50 QD rear wheel, but on receiving the wheel it doesn't seem to fit?

Now, after much research I think I am right in saying that the B44 is basically the same unit but with differing spindles and bearings?

Could it be I have bought a pup?

I have attached images of the wheel, the speedo (which I know is knackered, which was advertised so), but can anybody try and decipher whether this is the correct wheel for my bike.

Any advice or tells would be greatly appreciated as I seem to have hit a brick wall with this bike.

Many thanks.

Hi there, looking at your pictures it looks the same of my 1970 A65. The bush with the two diverent OD should be against the bearing face between the tacho drive. Then comes a thick spacer.
Take a look on the parts book. It may help you.

Brake plate part no 68-6130.

The spindle is off a unit single. The sleeves you have for the speedo drive are fitted the wrong way around (assuming you have two) the stepped one goes on the inside.

The bearing in the drum and the short spindle are different on the B series.  As is the brake plate. The hole is smaller on those bikes. If you can measure the ID of the brake plate spindle hole someone can confirm. The bearings in the wheel itself should be the same.

Also your sprocket looks a bit big. I taught to be a 47t and again unit singles I beleive are different to the twins.

Many thanks for the replies.

I have attached more images of the rear wheel and supplied the corresponding dimensions in mm.

The sprocket has 59 Teeth! I have rearranged the spacers and now makes more sense.

One thing I have noticed looking at the parts book, the longer spindle does not seem to have a raised section on the spindle as mine has (Image 2), is this a unit single thing?

Also, am I right in thinking that the drive side swing arm should be located on the black mark as indicated on image 3? If so, it simply will not fit.

Finally, if this is the incorrect wheel could it be possible to somehow make this particular wheel fit as the the A65 rear wheels seem to be like hens teeth.

Thanks again Fellas.

Hi Tommy,

As I say, the wheel will fit. However you will need:

The 2x correct spindles
The correct bearing for the brake drum
The correct brake plate.

Later A65s did not have a reduced portion on the long spindle, early ones did but these also had the chrome brake plate, commonly using 42t drum.

Yep, the fatter portion of the spindle should go through the A65 swing arm. Out of curiosity, could you post a picture of your swing arm, there were 3 different types fitted to A65s

Hi Allan

I have attached images showing the swing arm, I apologise in advance for the red paint!

Thanks again.

Your swing arm is correct.

Hello tommy, made some pictures, got the same swingarm 1970 type. The 2 lower shock mouting bolt have 2 special flat nuts wich falls partly in de reces in the swingarm. They are 3/8 bscy. On the left side you mount the chaingard with it. It's to center the lower bolts.

The pictures may help you hopefully,

Ah! That makes sense.

Thanks for the info Allen you have been very patient!

Also, thanks Gup for the images, I think these will be invaluable when the wheel comes together as the parts book I have can be at times a bit confusing.

Cheers fellas.
