Some of you might remember me (or maybe not) from a few months ago, when I was asking about a suitable lightweight bike for a tall rider with no experience of motorcycle maintenance. Anyway , I've now bought a 1965 BSA B40, so I expect I'll be asking for your help with lots of things from now on. I apologise in advance for the stupidity of some of the questions!

Good choice and a bit more power than a 250cc C15. Is the bike taxed and MOT'd?

Yes, taxed and MOT'd. Got it yesterday, took for just a short run today - really enjoyed it.  Very different experience from my other bike, a modern-day Bonneville. Now looking at acquiring a variety of tools, probably secondhand, and looking forward very much to tinkering.

Welcome to this good forum. First thing I would do is change engine oil just to give it a good flush. Chances are the oil is old a the owner knew he was going to sell it. Oil is the HEART of your engine. Good choice of bike, you will buy a twin by next year. LOL.

Yes, I'll change the oil. Interestingly, the previous owner fitted a tap just below the oil tank to stop oil seeping through a faulty non-return valve below when the engine is off.  I think I read in a classic bike mag or somewhere recently of something similar - maybe it's a common ruse. Just need to make sure I don't forget to turn the oil tap on before I start the bike!

shouldn't need another mot as the 40 year rolling mot dissection comes into force in may this year .
