Hi,

It looks like it is not for an A65 at all as it has chain tensioners more like a B40 which also has combined sprocket and drum but does not have a push through spindle as in the drawing.  The nut on the sprocket side also has a very definite shape so anyone with one these would should recognise it.
Hopefully someone will tell us what it is from.
It is bit of a worry when the official manual is not accurate.

Thanks anyway Dave.

With the sheer variations of set-ups Its kinda difficult to know what I should be following.....

For instance the right hand side of the rear wheel assembly shows two spacers: 69-6057 (hub side of spacer 67-6028) and  68-6070 (off-side of same spacer).
I assume that none of these spacers should rotate when the spindle is tightened up, but that the 67-6133 end cover should rotate with the wheel- that being so, what holds the end cover on to the hub?

Incidentally, I will have to order the 6057 and 6070 spacers (plus the 5886 felt ring) as none of these came with the bike.....

It's all kinda 'make it up as ya go along'.......

I've posted some piccies of what I have at the moment but, as you can see, the spacers and felt washer are missing.......... (just hope the spindle is long enough with the two new spacers......

Hi,

I think someone out there must have a known standard setup for this rear wheel.  That last image I copied from the manual is as I said completely wrong.
Assuming that your engine has the speedo drive running off the gearbox then the photos you have posted look right for that side of the wheel.
Do you have the relevant parts book for your year?  I believe it will be on the Members area of the BSAOC web site.  Page 58(ish) shows the arrangement of parts.
From what I can see it should have the steel brake plate and this could be causing the problem.
Can you post some pictures of the brake plate and spacers that are in there.
The aluminium plate did not come until quite late.
Don't order the spacers yet.

Dave.

Below  the first cross section of the rear hub for pre 1966 with QD wheel, steel brake plate and speedo driven from the gearbox layshaft.

The coverplate 67 6133 should be a push fit over the bearing housing. They can be difficult to remove.

Second cross section is the 1966 setup, QD wheel. steel brake plate and speedo gearbox on the hub.

The parts books for both will be subject to a number mid season ammendments which appear as Parts Service Bulletins (many of which are available in the members area of the BSAOC website service sheets prefix G and GA) and also in various master price lists issued by the factory, so the numbers in the parts books may have been changed since it was printed.

For these 2 rear hub setups thereare some changes which include the brake plate and spindle numbers.

The pre 1966 brake plate shown 42 6030 in parts book, master price list shows "use 68 6093", and spindle 68 6068, master list shows "use 68 6075" and for 68 6075 shows "use 68 6096"

The 1966 parts book shows brake plate as 42 6364, master price list also shows "use 68 6093", and spindle 68 6075, master list as above shows "use 68 6096"

So there is some interchangability between 1966 and pre 1966.

1967 and the brake plate became the cast aluminium alloy item and a number of other changes to parts.

OK, in an attempt to make some more sense of my version of the Lightning, I removed the main spindle and tightened up the stub axle side and confirmed that the wheel and drum rotated freely- and had no sloppiness.

I then removed the 'rather nice' stainless washer (wot I had just made), and tightened up the main spindle. Again the wheel spun freely and had no play.

So I have decided to go with that arrangement. (thanks for your suggestion of not purchasing anything just yet Dave)

I have fitted the new chain- which seems to line up nicely with the gearbox sprocket, but I will try fitting the original/ slightly tatty chaincase to see what that throws up in terms of clearances and etc......

If anyone wants me to photograph where I am, I'll be happy to oblige, although the previous piccies kinda show what I settled on.

Again guys, thanks for your help/ suggestions.

As always- onwards, then backwards........ probably.

Dave.
