Hello,
My front hub is a bit shabby, it has the grey painted finish.
Can you take off the paint and polish the hub ( inc air intake ) or is re painting the way to go.

They polish up really well - BSA only painted them to save on the cost!

Thank you, I would need to rub down if re painting so I will go the extra and try polishing as you suggest.

They look great when polished but are a bugger to keep that way when you lace a rim on it. Re-painted mine but polished the brake plate.

Thank you, that sounds like a good solution.

I think the polished finish on conical hubs behave in the same way as the engine covers - it's probably the same aluminium alloy. Rather than painting the hubs, you can always lacquer them if you're worried about the polished surface tarnishing.

Thank you, what lacquer would you suggest that won't blister easily.

I've never had a need to lacquer any of the conical hubs I've got as the polished surfaces have stood the test of time. However, I did lacquer the polished engine covers on my more modern Japanese multi and that finish has lasted well. Unfortunately, I can't remember what lacquer I used but I don't think it was anything that special.

I have used Silver Wheel aerosols topped off with clear lacquer, available from most motor factors . This works very well and looks great, but needs the rim and spokes removing first.
brush painting any hub is very time consuming and never looks that good to me.

Thank you all for the advice, much appreciated.
