Hi all,

In the BSA A65 parts books, the silencer mounting brackets are the same from 1966 through to 1969 and have the BSA part numbers 68-2780 (right-hand) & 68-2781 (left hand).

I have seen various online suppliers offering pattern brackets under these part numbers in stainless steel, bare steel and black painted steel. They all appear to have slight differences. Some of them have an offset bend in them, some of them are just straight. Some of them have the folded edges around the top radius and sides, which looks like what is in the parts book images and will obviously be more rigid than the ones without this folded over edge. Some of them have the two bottom holes parallel with the bottom edge and some of them have the holes at different heights, which is again what the images in the parts book look like.

I have seen a couple of these brackets on eBay, which are listed as genuine BSA NOS items. They look very strong and the offset bend in them is far more acute than on any of the pattern ones I have seen.

I have attached a couple of images of the eBay genuine BSA brackets and also an image of the ones that Burton Bike Bits sell on their website.

You can clearly see the difference in the hole positions and the offset.

Which ones look the most like what you have on your bikes? Do you know if yours are genuine, or pattern?

These are small details but will make a difference in both the rigidity and position of the silencers. Maybe my home made stainless ones that I had on the bike originally are the reason that my main stand always clattered against the left hand silencer?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

probably a production factor. cheaper and less tooling needed to make the flat ones than the offset ones, my old T Bolts had the offset ones..

The ones I have (I changed my exhaust system since) are the original OEM, they are the flat type and were fitted from 68-70 if not earlier aswell.

Just a note that those burton bike bits ones are also not made properly, the holes should be patterned as such with the dog leg brackets above it, so that the bracket apears to be trailing backwards from the footrest peg mount.

The brackets on my '68 A50 are cranked with offset holes as in the top pics. If they were straight I would have to pack the footrest bolt to get it to line up with the silencer bracket. My stand used to hit the LH silencer, probably due to wear in the stand spindle and the flat near the pivot which stops it going up too far. Check it with the bike on the sidestand. A spot of weld, probably only about 1mm thick to build up the flat should sort it out.

Thank you all for the information.

The stops don't wear in the up position, they usually only wear bsa a use people sit on the bikes when they are in full stand. If you have the correct straight brackets then the only bit touching the silencer will be the arm for levering the stand, the dog leg bracket moves the silencer in too far.

I'd suspect the dogleg brackets were used when the early centre stands were being fitted.
