 :) :) :)

Greetings.

My boxa bits A65 has an A50 Carb. So I need to buy a new one(If I get a used one by the time it is checked and sorted it will be almost as expensive as a new one). Normal options Monobloc or Concentric. Any one have any serious reasoned preferences. Or what else is on a market

Couldn't possibly decide... my A10 runs monobloc with extension on float chamber,  the t bolts had both, the current A50 has a mikuni.  I think the Mik is a better carb  spares easily available if going concentric look at wassells version, cheaper option same carb their own copy. Cant speak for use as I've fitted a pair to my t100 chop as the ethanol ate the amal s , modern amals being machined in India, so take your pick..

Hi Mike

I have a PWK chinese copy flat slide with a rubber manifold on my A65 and it runs great, starting is much better than with an old worn amal.

I also have a Mikuni that i am going to try on A65 as well.

They might not be to everybodys taste but if it works!

I think Allens carbs or motocarb are both helpful.

When I purchased my 1963 A65 in bits it came with a concentric carb but it did not start very well with it so I bought a second hand mono bloc and it runs perfectly and starts easily the correct carb for mine is 389/67 but changed depending on the year. As regards cost I bought the carb on ebay fitted new slide, jets, and needle and it was still less than half the cost of a new carb. The actual number 67 is not important as long as the carb is 389 and the bore size is correct you can fit new internals the number is really just an Amal number to determine the make and model for particular bike.

Refurb Carb vs New Carb.
One of the main benefits of a new Concentric carb is there is no wear in the choke slide or bore so you will get the best air seal -until it wears out- but if its the Premier slide that won't be in your lifetime.
However, if you refurb the old carb by buying a new slide and hone the bore to suit plus new jets, needle etc. you will get pretty damn close to that benefit, provided the pilot system isn't gunged up where the sun don't shine between the pressed in steel disc and the jet.
If that's the case it can be drilled out, body tapped and a blanking plug fitted but that's a bit specialist (and expensive)for a lot of folks.

It all depends on the price you pay for the carb in the first place. Most seem to be advertised for around £25 - £50 and a lot have issues such as damaged threads etc. that need sorting. By the time you have bought new slide, jets, needles, hone etc. plus getting the pilot system sorted, it's not far off the cost of a cheaper Wassell copy and for a few quid more a genuine Amal standard.
However, for the Premier, you do get so much more, particularly the Teflon coated slide so you pays your money as they say!

Another thing to bear in mind is you do not say what year your A65 is. If it is an early model like mine then the carb is behind the side panels and you have an extension arrangement for the tickler if you fit a concentric carb then it would be difficult if not impossible to use the tickler when starting because of the side panels. I do not know of anyone who stocks these tickler extension parts I had to manufacture my own a quite fiddly thing to make.

Maybe Amal will come out with a Premier Monobloc.

Hi all.

In answer to the last three posts. I shall fit a new concentric because as stated by the time I've messed about with a used one and with no reliability guarantee it will be the most sensible way to go. The machine will maybe only do another 10K miles in my lifetime.

The point about the tickler, that's understood and I've solved it with the Monobloc by extending the tickler by a couple of inches. However I am now doing a retro fit with the later side panels. (doing my existing A50 and sons A65 at the same time.) Fortunately one of our "nice guys" gave me a loan of a side panel bracket and I've been able  to make them.

Don't think they will produce a uprated Monobloc in time to be of use to me.

Thanks to you all once again for your valuable input. Will keep you posted.

Hi,

I have had a Mikuni on my A65 since 2008 and for several thousand miles.  No issues really apart from a bit more fiddly to change the main jet and the petrol must be turned off when engine not running.  In the blurb it states something along the lines of the needle jet is to control the fuel level and not to cut the fuel off.
Not having to tickle for starting was bit weird to start with, but trust the choke and it is fine.
Quite bit more expensive than a Concentric.

Dave.
