Hi, Being a newcomer to BSA singles but technically savvy, I would like to know best procedure to install head studs on a B31. The old ones looked a bit pitted so I decided to purchase some new stainless ones, Is there a torque setting for these into the casing? also what is the best sealer to use on the threads into the crankcase? I was told loctite by someone but I am not sure they need to be 'locked' in place, just sealed and tight. Its a 1959 alternator model. Thanks.

somebody will be along to say otherwise but as far as Im concerned.
I wouldnt use stainless. I know many suppliers dont make mild steel fastners nowadays as they consider mild steel needs chrome plating so stainless wont rust and looks nice, without the plating.
I dont torque into the casing, never have.
I dont use a sealant on the threads, maybe a thin smear of oil or copperslip.

as I said, its my opinion and we dont use stainless, or sealer or torque on our railway brake parts and never have done in the 40+ years Ive been there that includes compressors. others may have their own views.
Ive pulled Japanese superbikes apart for head and barrel jobs....no stainless or sealed in studs either. just checked a couple of manuals on the laptop only mention is a thin film of engine oil on studs in cases, nuts on top of head are torqued

I wouldn't use stainless steel for head studs. Why would you want to? Stainless has different properties to what is normally used and unless it is beneficial, stick with the original standard studs.
Also, no need to seal the studs - hand tight and perhaps nip up a little. When the head is torqued down, nothing will move!

Hi,
I would recommend getting bolts as close to the original as you can, try here:

I have attached the services sheets (303) for your bike, first printed in 1948, reprinted in 1961. It suggests screw until  tight, normal running maintenance would be tighten more if leaking.

Best wishes...
