Hello,

Am I to assume the return spring is in the correct position?

Is the travel on the kickstart from the 10 O'clock position to the 5 O'clock position?

The reason I ask is there doesn't seem to be much in the way of resisitance when kicking the motor over.

The lever doesn't return to the upper position every time.

I spoke to SRM (who have just completed the rebuild and they say its the bush bedding in? Anyone else had this before?

Regards,

Mark.

Hi Mark
The assembly looks correct.
When you say you don't feel much in the way of resistance, surely you can feel the motor coming up to compression?
When you pull in the clutch lever, how stiff is the kickstart to turn over and does it readily return?
SRM saying that the bush needs bedding in is total fob off rubbish. If all the parts have been replaced properly it should be free.
If SRM have carried out a full engine rebuild at no doubt great expense, I would get them to sort it out particularly if you're down on compression as well.
Regards
Jim

Hello Jim,

Great expense.....not sure about quality control >:(

I went out on my first road run after the rebuild....after 3 or for miles....my kickstart ended up in this position with the sound of metal on metal (Teeth) crunching.

I bungeed the kickstart in the upright position to get home....the noise disappeared.

I have emailed SRM.....anyone else seen this?

The resistance on the kickstart has increased  :(

Mark.

The spring assembly looks correct.
I'm pretty sure your problem is the kickstart bush in the inner timing cover is not perfectly aligned with the bush in the gear cluster bearing plate. Normally when you buy these bushes, they are finished to size and don't require in line reaming apart from taking out any slight misalignment between the two. Additionally the inner timing cover is stamped and matched to the crankcases and if this has been replaced for some reason, this again could lead to some misalignment.
SRM will be well aware of these issues and should not returned a rebuilt engine to you in this condition.
Unfortunately the only way to resolve this properly, will be to remove the outer and inner timing covers and inline ream the bushes, however, if you do this yourself I'm sure SRM will nullify any warranty so I would suggest you go back to SRM and tell them that this is unacceptable for a rebuilt engine.
I'm sure when BSA sold new A65s they didn't have this problem with sticking kickstarts where the bushes just needed 'bedding' in.

As SRM rebuilt the engine, then they will need to fix it under warranty just the same as if your local garage fixed your car and it broke down with the same fault. I know it will take lots of time and effort for you to get the lump out of the frame, but sending it back is by far the best approach. (They may prefer to have it collected by their own courier).
They are a very responsible company and I would be surprised (and disappointed) if they tried to deny responsibility or refuse to fully fix the problem.

Thank you again for the responses  8)

I draughted a lengthy email to SRM and to be fair to them they have agreed something is amiss.

They have offered to send a courier to collect my bike (from Essex) and to take it away and sort her out :)

Cannot argue with that at all....excellent service.

Cheers,

Mark.

Hi Mark,
I somehow new they would. They are a top class outfit.  Let us all know what caused the problem when you get it back.

I will sure to post the outcome....thanks again for the help  8)

I think the problem might have been that the kick start quadrant was not seated correctly and when the casing was tightened up it was fouling on the quadrant shoulder happened to me once just a thought. Roy
